Shoryuji Castle
About Shoryuji Castle
Shoryuji Castle is a citadel in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, Japan. This fort was built in 1339 by means of Hosokawa Yoriharu, a chief samurai commander below Ashikaga Takauji, the founder of the Ashikaga shogunate. The area around the fortress is a strategic foothold to guard Kyoto, the capital of Japan at that point, from western threats. During the Onin War, this fort became used as a fort of the western alliance and became occupied via Iwanari Tomomichi, a daimyo of the Miyoshi extended family, in the course of the Sengoku length. It is one of the great place.
The fort fell to Oda Nobunaga in 1568, and become given to Hosokawa Tadaoki, who occupied it until 1579. At the battle of Yamazaki between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide, following Mitsuhide's killing of Nobunaga, this fortress's garrison collapsed, forcing Mitsuhide to escape to his demise. In 1564, Nobunaga sent his sister Oichi to be the bride of Azai Nagamasa. This aided him in his 1566 conquest for Mino province, and opened the path to Kyoto. The shogun Yoshiaki and Mitsuhide arrived at Kyoto, the capital of Japan, changing Hongoku-ji temple to a brief palace in November 1568. Nobunaga back from Kyoto on January 4, 1569.
