About Shiogama Jinja
Shiogama Jinja is a Shinto shrine in the city of Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, within the Tohoku place of northern Japan. Known from the 9th century, 15 of its homes have been particular Important Cultural Properties. It is the pinnacle shrine of numerous hundred Shiogama shrines located at some stage in Japan. The kami of Shiogama Jinja have long been worshipped as mother or father deities of seafarers, substantially fisherman, and of pregnant girls. Basho recounts his visit in Oku no Hosomichi, describing the impressive pillars, painted ceiling, lengthy flight of stone steps, votive lanterns, and the 'sparkle of the vermilion fence in the morning solar'.
The creation of Shiogama Jinja dates to earlier than the historical technology. Per shrine legend, the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu-Omikami, specially commanded Takemikazuchi-no-Kami and Futsunushi-no-Kami, to increase the Tuhoku place. A 1/3 kami, Shiotsuchi-Oji-no-Kami, guided the alternative to this vicinity. After their arrival, the area loved a period of peace, and Shiotsuchi-Oji-no-Kami taught the local community how to make salt from sea water. In gratitude, a shrine turned into erected to the 3 kami. Shiogama Jinja appears in ancient records in 820 AD
