About Megijima

Megijima is an island placed inside the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, north of the metropolis of Takamatsu, and is part of Kagawa Prefecture. It has a place of 2.66 km2, a coastline of 8.9 km, and a population of approximately 200. Megijima is a famous destination in summer time because of its public seaside and near proximity to Takamatsu City approx. 4 km. Additionally, with over 2000 cherry blossom trees, Megijima also sees an influx of site visitors during the springtime while people congregate for cherry blossom viewing.

The island has been linked to the mythical island Onigashima island of ogres visited through the folktale man or woman Momotaro. The caves on the pinnacle of Washigamine Summit, as the home of the ogres from that story, are a popular visitor spot. There is an statement platform at the peak of Washigamine Summit wherein you can still get a 360 degree view of the Seto Inland Sea. Megijima is also one of the host websites of the Setouchi Triennale. During the competition period, many transient and permanent art exhibitions are hooked up across the island.
