About Tomb of Hunting and Fishing

The Tomb of Hunting and Fishing, previously referred to as the Tomb of the Hunter, is an Etruscan tomb within the Necropolis of Monterozzi close to Tarquinia, Italy. It become found in 1873 and has been dated variously to about 530 – 520 BC, 510 BC or 510 – 500 BC. Stephan Steingräber calls it "certainly one of the most lovely and unique of the Tarquinian tombs from the Late Archaic duration". R. Ross Holloway emphasizes the reduction of humans to small figures in a huge herbal environment. There have been no precedents for this in Ancient Greek artwork or within the Etruscan art it influenced.

It became a prime improvement in the history of ancient painting. The entrance to the tomb ends in the antechamber, which has a doorway to the main chamber opposite the entrance. The wall frescoes of the antechamber show figures which can be nearly naked, reputedly engaging in a Dionysian ritual dance. They are in a grove that is embellished with ribbons, wreaths, mirrors and cistae. Reclining satyrs with rhytoi appear within the gable of the entry wall. They too are an instance of the have an impact on of the cult of Dionysus on the Etruscan religion and cult of the useless. The gable of the back wall suggests a looking scene.
