Syracuse

Syracuse is famous among visitors and locals and a historic city in Sicily, the capital of the province of Syracuse. The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture, and as the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This city played a key role in ancient times, when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world.

Syracuse is situated in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, next to the Gulf of Syracuse beside the Ionian Sea.

Since 2005, the whole city of Syracuse, alongside the Necropolis of Pantalica which falls inside the region of Syracuse, was recorded as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This programme aims to catalogue, name and conserve sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity.
