About Sicily Rome American Cemetery and Memorial

Sicily–Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is a Second World War American military battle grave cemetery, placed just outdoor Nettuno, near Anzio, Italy. The cemetery, containing 7,858 American war dead, covers 77 acres and became committed in 1956. It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The cemetery turned into stablished in Nettuno, as a transient battlefield cemetery on 24 January 1944, two days after Operation Shingle started, the Allied landings at Anzio and Nettuno on mainland Italy.

The majority of burials on the cemetery are of fellows that died fighting in the liberation of Sicily, code-named Operation Husky; within the landings at the Salerno, code-named Operation Avalanche and the heavy combating northward; and the landings, code-named Operation Shingle, at Anzio and Nettuno and enlargement of the beachhead; and in air and naval aid inside the areas.

The cemetery covers 77 acres with a mild slope growing from a pool with an island and cenotaph flanked through companies of Italian cypress trees. Beyond the pool is the colossal discipline of headstones of 7,861 of American military war useless, arranged in mild arcs on broad inexperienced lawns below rows of pine bushes.
