Rossano

Rossano is a city and frazione of Corigliano-Rossano inside the province of Cosenza, Calabria, southern Italy. The town is located on an eminence c. 3 Km from the Gulf of Taranto. The metropolis is known for its marble and alabaster quarries. The metropolis is the seat of a Catholic archbishop and has a great cathedral and fortress. Two Popes have been born in the city, in conjunction with Saint Nilus the Younger. Roscianum was the unique name of the city under the Roman Empire. In the 2^nd century AD, emperor Hadrian built or rebuilt a port right here, that could accommodate as much as 300 ships.

It turned into stated in the Antonine itineraries, as one of the critical fortresses of Calabria. The Goths of Alaric I and, inside the following century, Totila, were not able to take it. The Rossanesi confirmed exceptional attachment to the Byzantine Empire, whose neighborhood strategos had his seat here. The Rossano Gospels, a 6^th Century illuminated manuscript of outstanding historical and inventive price, is a tangible relic of that period.
