Potenza
About Potenza
Potenza is a city and comune within the Southern Italian area of Basilicata. Capital of the Province of Potenza and the Basilicata region, the city is the very best local capital and one of the maximum provincial capitals in Italy, overlooking the valley of the Basento river inside the Apennine Mountains of Luciana, east of Salerno. Its territory is bounded through the comuni of Anzi, Avigliano, Brindisi Montagna, Picerno, Pietragalla, Pignola, Ruoti, Tito and Vaglio Basilicata. The first agreement of Potentia became likely positioned at a lower elevation than at present, a few 10 kilometres south of present day Potenza. The Lucani of Potentia sided in opposition to Rome's enemies at some point of the latter's wars in opposition to the Samnites and the Bruttii.
Subjugated in the course of the 4th century BC the Potentini rebelled after the Roman defeat at Cannae in 216 BC. However, the Battle of the Metaurus marked the stop of any Carthaginian aspirations in Italy and Potentia became reconquered with the aid of the Romans and reduced to the fame of navy colony. In the 6th century, the metropolis surpassed to the Lombard Duchy of Benevento. Incursions through Saracens raiders menaced the town until the Norman conquest of southern Italy secured the region. In the 12th century, Potenza became an Episcopal.
