About Ponte della Maddalena
Ponte della Maddalena a bridge crossing the Serchio river near the town of Borgo a Mozzano in the Italian province of Lucca. One of ious medieval scaffolds known as Ponte del Diavolo, the "Extension of the Devil", it was an essential waterway crossing on the Via Francigena, an early medieval street to Rome for those originating from France that was a critical medieval journey course. The extension is an exceptional case of medieval designing, likely charged by the Countess Matilda of Tuscany c. 1080-1100.
It was redesigned c. 1300 under the course of Castruccio Castracani. The biggest traverse is 37.8 m. The scaffold is likewise portrayed in a fourteenth century novella by Giovanni Sercambi of Lucca. Around 1500 it went up against the name of Ponte della Maddalena, from a speech committed to Mary Magdalene, whose statue remained at the foot of the extension on the eastern bank.
In 1670 the General Council of the Republic of Lucca issued a declaration disallowing entry over the extension with grinders ceppi and sacks of flour so as to protect the structure. In 1836, in the wake of being severely harmed amid a surge, the extension experienced pressing repair work. In the mid 1900s so as to prepare for the surfaced roadway an extra curve was added to the correct hand area, significantly adjusting the first outline.
