About Ortona Lighthouse

Ortona Lighthouse is an energetic lighthouse placed in Ortona at the Adriatic Sea. The Adriatic Sea is a body of water separating the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan peninsula. The Adriatic is the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean Sea, extending from the Strait of Otranto where it connects to the Ionian Sea, to the northwest and the Po Valley. The nations with coasts on the Adriatic are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia.

The lighthouse become built in 1937 and consists of an octagonal prism tower 24 metres high, painted with black and with horizontal bands, atop a 2-storey keeper's house with balcony and lantern. The lantern, which mounts a Type OF 375 optics, is painted in gray metallic, is located at 23 metres above sea degree and emits white flashes in a 6 seconds period, visible up to a distance of 15 nautical miles. The lighthouse is absolutely computerized and is managed by using the Marina Militare with the identity code.
