About Lauria
Lauria is a city and comune of the province of Potenza, in Basilicata, southern Italy, located near the borders of Calabria. It is a walled, medieval city on the steep facet of a hill, with any other portion of municipal territory in the plain under. It is historically the most important metropolis in the southwestern Lucania region. The original nucleus of the city appeared probably in the tenth century, near the region in which later the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Armo turned into edificated. However it appears that evidently monastic activity pre-existed inside the location, as Lauria simply method the lavra metropolis.
The Castle of Lauria, later attributed to Roger of Lauria, turned into constructed by using Saracens. In the twelfth century Lauria turned into the seat of a Norman fief, which turned into held by Gibel after which via his son Richard of Lauria, who died in the struggle of Benevento on 1266. His son Roger of Lauria become a famous admiral of the thirteenth century. In 1806 the town became destroyed and the population slaughtered via the French squaddies below General André Massena, as punishment for having supported the Bourbon kings.
