About Codigoro
Codigoro is an Italian town of 11,792 inhabitants in the province of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna. It is part of the Po Delta Union. The thesis that the original toponym of Codigoro was Neroma is refuted by Antonio Frizzi in his Memoirs for the history of Ferrara, positioning the hypothetical locality much closer to today's Valli di Comacchio, deducing it from the distances obtained from the Tabula Peutingeriana and Antonina. Also the locality Corniculani can be calculated at most close to Mezzogoro.
The name derives from Gaurus, then the Po of Goro, a territory that was at the beginning of a bifurcation of branches of the river Caput Gauri. In the Vulgar Latin you find the term Caput gauri in some pomposian documents of 1243. Medium gauri became later Mezzogoro. The history of Codigoro can be traced back to the 9th century when a Benedictine community settled in the territory of what is now Pomposa, which was then positioned on a small island bathed by the Adriatic Sea and the branches of the Po di Volano and the Po di Goro.
