About Cattedrale di San Lorenzo
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is located in Piazza del Duomo, next to the Ponderaria Mensa. The church was built over the ruins of the ancient Forum Tiburtino, reusing the site of the Roman Hall of which the apse has been preserved, still visible outside the current basilica. In particular, a tradition attributes the foundation to the emperor Constantine while the old medieval church remains only the very tall bell tower 45 meters in Romanesque style, having been completely rebuilt in 1635. Worthy of attention and visit inside of the Duomo is certainly the thirteenth-century group of the Deposition of Christ, a masterpiece of rare beauty: it is a work of solid wood of great value and belongs to the Roman sculpture of the twelfth or thirteenth century, evidence of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic; Also part of the artistic heritage is the Trittico del Salvatore, a valuable painting on wood from the 12th century, a work attributed to the Benedictine monks of Farfa.
