About Slieve Donard

Slieve Donard is the highest mountain in Northern Ireland and the broader province of Ulster, with a height of 850 metres. One of the Mourne Mountains, it's far near the city of Newcastle at the eastern coast of County Down, overlooking the Irish Sea. It is likewise the seventh maximum top at the island of Ireland. The Mourne Wall – constructed in the early 20th century runs up the western and southern slopes of the mountain, joining a small stone tower at the summit. Also on the summit are the stays of ancient burial cairns, certainly one of which is the remains of the best regarded passage tomb in Ireland.

In Irish mythology the mountain became associated with the mythical figures Boirche and Slangha. It became later associated with, and named after, Saint Donard, who became stated to have made the summit his hermitage. Up until the 1830s, human beings would climb the mountain as a part of a yearly pilgrimage, which may have initially been a Lughnasadh ritual. Royal Engineers camped on the summit for 4 months in 1826 as a part of the Ordnance Survey's Principal Triangulation.
