About Moydrum Castle
Moydrum Castle is a ruined fortress situated within the locality of Moydrum, Ireland, just to the east of Athlone. The belongings are privately owned. The lands of Moydrum have been granted to the Hand cock own family, at first from Devon in England, throughout the Cromwell plantations of Ireland in the 17th century. From then at the family remained one of the most distinguished landowning dynasties and landlords in the place. Moving ahead several generations, head of circle of relatives William Hand cock served as a Member of Parliament MP in Grattan's Parliament, representing Athlone until the parliament’s dissolution following the Acts of Union 1800 with the United Kingdom.
Hand cock had firstly been an opponent of the Act, however changed into promised a peerage have to he vote in want of it. He duly succumbed and finally, in 1812, Hand cock was created 1st Baron Castlemaine. The Baron decided to create the perfect stately home on his lands at Moydrum, and therefore asked architect Richard Morrison to rework and increase an existing house belonging to the circle of relatives there, built c.1750.
