About Monaghan County Museum

Monaghan County Museum is a museum which documents the history of County Monaghan. First opened in 1974, it turned into the first complete-time, professionally staffed, and nearby authority funded Irish local museum. The Museum was housed inside the Courthouse inside the centre of Monaghan city till a fireplace in 1981, which gutted the building. After rescuing the collections, the Museum became moved for duration to St Macartan's College. In 1990 the Museum reopened within the current premises of one 2 Hill Street, which were originally two town homes relationship from the 1860s, that have been transformed for the Museum's use.

The Museum has won a number of awards through the years, which include Council of Europe Museum Prize in 1980, and the Gulbenkian - Norwich Union Award for Best Collections Care in 1993. The collections of the Museum report the records of County Monaghan over the path of human records. The Museum also keeps a big series of archival cloth, which incorporates early estate records rentals, maps and wages books and local authority information.
