Haulbowline is the name of an island in Cork Harbor off the coast of Ireland. The world's first yacht club becomes founded on Haulbowline in 1720. The western side of the island is the principle naval base and headquarters for the Irish Naval Service, with the east facet previously used for heavy industry. Since 1966 the island has been connected to the mainland by means of a street bridge. At a strategic and deepwater position within the harbor, the island has long been a army base.
The island changed into first fortified in 1602, and initially an essential base for the British Army. In 1603 the Cork town fathers had been accused of trying to demolish it, and William Meade, the Recorder of Cork, become charged with treason as a result.
