About Gort
Gort is a metropolis in south County Galway, in the west of Ireland. It lies just north of the border with County Clare on the old Galway Limerick Avenue, now the R458. Gort is located in the territory of Ui Fiachrach Aidhne also referred to as the apparent of Aidhne, that's coextensive with the diocese of Kilmacduagh Cill Mhic Dhuach. Gort takes its call, Gort Inse Guaire, from gort a meadow, island and Guaire Guaire Aidne mac Colmain, the 6th century King of Connacht and consumer of St. Colman Mac Duagh. During the Middle Ages the chiefs of Cenel Aeda na h Echtge, the O Shaughnessys had their main stronghold in Gort, on a website which later became a cavalry barracks.
