Architectural features of the building encompass sash-fashion windows, pavilions, a balustrade, a hipped roof, and large dome. It become designed by the architect James Gandon in 1790 for John Dawson, the primary Earl of Portarlington. It is one of the few houses to have been designed through Gandon. Other buildings by means of Gandon consist of the Custom House and Kings Inns in Dublin. While creation started inside the 1790s, the first Earl died in 1798, and paintings became no longer completed until the tenure of the 1/3 Earl of Portalington within the 1860s.

Passing via numerous proprietors through the late 19th and early twentieth centuries, the residence and gardens had been taken into possession by means of the Irish state within the Nineteen Nineties. Now managed by using the Office of Public Works, the property is open to site visitors."Emo Court". Heritageireland.Ie. Heritage Ireland. Archived from the unique on 17 December 2007.
