About Dunamase

Dunamase or The Rock of Dunamase is a rocky outcrop in the townland of Park or Dunamase in County Laois. The rock, 46 metres above a flat simple, has the ruins of Dunamase Castle, a shielding stronghold courting from the early Hiberno-Norman period with a view throughout to the Slieve Bloom Mountains. It is near the N80 street between the cities of Portlaoise and Stradbally. Excavations within the Nineteen Nineties confirmed that the Rock was first settled within the 9th century when a hill castle or dun turned into constructed on the site.

The first recognized agreement on the rock was Dun Masc, or Masc’s Fort, an early Christian settlement that become pillaged in 842 by means of the Vikings. In 845 the Vikings of Dublin attacked the website online and the abbot of Terryglass, Aed son of Dub dá Chrích, changed into killed there. There is no clean proof of 10th–eleventh century profession. The castle was built in the 2nd half of of the 12th century.
