About Clara Bog Nature Reserve

Clara Bog is one of the largest noticeably intact raised bathrooms final in Ireland. It lies southeast of the R436 local avenue between the village of Ballycumber and the city of Clara, in County Offaly. Much of the bog is nation-owned and managed as a nature reserve covering some 460 ha. A Special Area of Conservation covers 836 ha. The lavatory become shaped in a melancholy, in the beginning a shallow lake, on the stop of the final ice age. An esker left with the aid of withdrawing glaciers reduce off drainage to the north.

Although generally classed as a distinctly intact lavatory, it's been negatively stricken by peat extraction and by means of the construction of the Clara to Rahan street in the past due 18th century. The bog subsided up to 6 meters following bisection through the road and related drainage. The dome structure of the lavatory changed into also changed by way of the street, leaving two domes, a western one and an jap one.
