About Castletown House

Castleton House, Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, is a Palladian United States of America residence constructed in 1722 for William Conolly, the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. It shaped the center-piece of a 550-acre estate. Sold to developers in 1965, the estate is now divided between State and private ownership. On William Conolly's dying in 1729, his widow Katherine persevered living within the house and hosting extravagant entertainments there until her very own dying in 1752. The Castletown property then exceeded to Conolly's nephew William James Conolly, MP for Ballyshannon. On William James' dying in 1754 it passed to his son Tom Conolly whose wife, Lady Louisa top notch-granddaughter of Charles II of England and Louise de Keroualle, completed the interior ornament at some stage in the 1760s and 1770s. Lady Louisa had grown up in Carton House, a demesne to the north east of Castletown

residence. Much of the paintings on the indoors become achieved to designs of William Chambers. She also did large work on the grounds; the trails via the wooded area are still in walking circumstance despite the fact that, because of anti-joyrider measures, numerous of the culverts have damaged and the pathways are once more challenge to flooding. The drainage scheme thru the forest is ingenious, developing dry paths for walking on land that is beneath the watertable. The ha-ha fence is part of this difficult network.
