About Carrigaphooca Castle

Carrigaphooca Castle is a ruined 5 storey rectangular tower house situated on a steep-sided rock overlooking the River Sullane. It is located 6 km west of Macroom, County Cork, Ireland, in an area as soon as known as Gleann na n Dearg. Carrigaphooca is made from sandstone and limestone and become built as a protective tower by means of Mac Carthy extended family member Donal Mac Carthy of Drishane c. 1336 to fifty one. Although named as a citadel, Carrigaphooca changed into built as a protective tower between 1436 and 1451, probably by Donal Mac Carthy of Drishane Castle. The Muskerry Mac Carthy family had been a medieval Barony placed in most cases inside the mid cork region. Although one among Ireland's finest medieval dynasties they misplaced huge areas of the region within the thirteenth century which they were trying to recapture within the mid 15th century, while the fort was constructed.
