About Carrauntoohil

Carrauntoohil is the very best mountain at the island of Ireland at 1,038.6 metres. Located in County Kerry, Carrauntoohil is the principal height of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Ireland's maximum mountain range. Carrauntoohil is composed of sandstone particles of diverse sizes which can be collectively known as Old Red Sandstone. Old Red Sandstone has a purple–reddish shade, and has definitely no fossils. Carrauntoohil changed into concern to full-size glaciation the result of which are deep fracturing of the rock, and the encircling of Carrauntoohil by U-shaped valleys, sharp arêtes, and deep corries.

Carrauntoohil is the critical peak of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, and has 3 primary ridges. A slim rocky ridge, or arête, to the north, known as the Beenkeragh Ridge, summits The Bones, and ends in Ireland's 2d-maximum top, Beenkeragh at 1,008 m. The ridge westward, called the Caher Ridge, also an arête, results in Ireland's 0.33-highest height, Caher at 1,000 m. A 0.33 and plenty wider, but unnamed, south-easterly ridge, or spur, leads down to a col wherein sits the pinnacle of the Devil's Ladder, but then rises back up to Cnoc na Toinne 845 m , from which the long easterly ridge segment of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks is accessed.
