Baltinglass Abbey
About Baltinglass Abbey
Baltinglass Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey based in 1148 and positioned in Baltinglass, Ireland. It is today a National Monument. Baltinglass Abbey is located on Church Lane in Baltinglass, at the east financial institution of the River Slaney. The site of Baltinglass Abbey is beside the River Slaney in a valley of the Wicklow Mountains which changed into a strategic mountain skip between the north and south elements of Leinster. The authentic name Belach Conglais means "pass of Cu Glas," relating to a mythological hero that become killed via wild boars. The archaeology of the environment testifies to the strategic significance of Baltinglass from prehistory.
In 1148, Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster, based a monastery on the site, as a minimum partially to increase his impact on the vicinity. Baltinglass Abbey was installed as a daughter residence of Mellifont Abbey, a Cistercian abbey near Drogheda. Diarmait gave it the Latin name Vallis Salutis, meaning "Valley of Salvation", and granted it 8 parcels of land in the vicinity as an endowment.
