About Athenry Castle
Athenry Castle is a tower residence and National Monument placed in Athenry, Ireland. Athenry Castle is positioned off Court Lane within the east part of Athenry, on the west bank of the River Clarin. It is sited on a natural rise and defended the ford. Despite being domestically called King John's Castle or King John's Court after the Lord of Ireland 1177 to 1216, it wasn't constructed till two decades after his reign. The original preserve becomes low and squat, the roof being at the level of the existing second floor.
Meyler de Bermingham extended it c. 1250. In 1316 the fortress turned into attacked, main to the development of city partitions. In the 15th century the Berminghams moved from it to their town residence near the marketplace move inside the square. In 1596 at some point of the Nine Years' War the castle fell into the fingers of the O Donnells. The battlements are 13th century and in the 15th century, those parapets had been incorporated into gables for a brand new roof.
