About Ninawa
Ninawa or Nineveh Governorate is a governorate in northern Iraq that carries the historical Assyrian metropolis of Nineveh. It was an integral part of Assyria from the twenty fifth century BC to the seventh century AD. It has an area of 37,323 km2 and an predicted population of 2,453,000 humans in 2003. Its chief metropolis and provincial capital is Mosul, which lies throughout the Tigris river from the ruins of historical Nineveh. Tal Afar is the second one-largest town.
Before 1976, it changed into known as Mosul Province and blanketed the existing-day Dohuk Governorate, which is now part of the self sustaining Iraqi Kurdistan. An ethnically, religiously and culturally numerous region, it's been problem to attacks with the aid of the terrorist agency referred to as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, with Mosul being captured on 10 June 2014, and lots of locations of worship and ancient ruins and monuments destroyed. A big offensive to retake the city, dubbed Operation "We Are Coming, Nineveh", started out in October 2016.
