About Nilgiri Mountain Railway

This is the only one of its kind railway which is present in Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is basically a 1000 mm meter gauge railway which is operated by the southern railway and Nilgiri mountain railway is the only Rack Railway of India. These railways are at least 6 to 8 decades old.

On July 2005, UNESCO added this railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site Of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. After this incident, this railway became known as mountain railways of India. This beautiful railway uses an Abt Rack and Pinion system to climb a steep gradient which is present in between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

This railway covers a total distance of 45.8 kilometers with over a 108 curves, 16 long tunnels, and over 250 bridges. The X class locomotives are manufactured by Swiss Locomotive in Switzerland, so you can expect a top notch built quality. This place is for the people who are interested in vintage railways. The aesthetic design, the built, the sturdiness of the locomotives are worth a watch!

it was a good place to visit. weather was quite cold during the time of our visit. parking availabilty was convinient. breakfast was not up to the mark. stuff was cooperative and overall the services were good. i would like to thank you for this memorable tour.

Driver was very rude, mis-behaving, always tried to escape many locations, put on AC as per his choice even on plain areas, didnt park the car properly in parking, asked us to get down on road instead of parking. I contacted make india journey but there was no positive response from them. Then their channel partner Blessing holidays assured to provide new driver, but ultimately he also raised his hands. So we did not have a comfortable journey. Pls take suitable action.
