About Netrani Island
Netrani or Pigeon island is a tiny heart shaped island situated 20 kms from Murdeshwar. Netrani Island is the best diving spot accessible from mainland India. Located on the west coast of Indian shoreline in the Arabian sea, this tiny little island is a perfect heaven for its rich and bio-diverse marine life and clear blue waters.
Back in the 90's a group of adventure seekers started diving around the island and were amazed by the corals and fish life. Earlier dive operators from Goa used to run expeditions to dive at Netrani but now due to the growing popularity of diving (which is still nascent in India), we have setup a permanent dive centre at Murdeshwar. We have seen humpbacks, Minke whales, Killer whales and occasional whale sharks that pass by on their migratory routes.
Water around Netrani varies from 26-30 C. Depending on the weather, some sites might get strong currents, perfect for drift dives. Also close by, called the Bhatkal ship wreck which is 25 km off the shore is a Japanese Iron ore carrier. The top deck is at 28m and sits in 50m of water, a perfect technical diving site in future as the industry grows.
Explore the treasures of underwater world at Netrani. Residents include Butterfly fish, Angel fish, Goat fish, Groupers, Snappers, Lion fish, Damsels, Goby's, Blenny's, Trigger fish, Scorpion fish, Cardinals, Flounders, Puffers, Bat fish (Phew! That's a lot!) The Bat Fist likes its pictures taken and follows us everywhere! You also get to see Nudibranchs, slugs, different kind of conches and urchins. No Nemo isn't here, as we don't have suitable anemonies to host them.
Also, if you are lucky, you get to see Whale sharks and Orcas, reef sharks & Whales. Pelagics such as Barracudas, Tuna, Jacks, Trevally, Fusiliers. Corals include Plate corals, Branching corals, Brain corals and Mushroom corals.
