About Manipur State Museum

The museum is located in the heart of the city, near Polo Ground, the Manipur State Museum is considered as the most prominent museum of the state. Inaugurated on 23rd September 1969 by the then Prime Minister of India - Indira Gandhi, this museum is a prominent tourist attraction. It comprises various galleries of natural history, ethnology and archaeology.

This two-store government-run museum, off Kangla Rd, has a curious collection of tribal costumes, royal clothing, historical polo equipment and stuffed carnivores. Outside, by the lawns, you’ll find an ornate and spectacular seventy-eight feet royal boat. Fronting the museum is the Polo Ground, where polo is said to have been invented. It opens at 10am in the morning and remains open till 4pm in the evening for visitors.
