Kavaledurga Fort

At a separation of 75 Kms from Shimoga, 81 Kms from Udupi, 31 Kms from Hosanagara and 16 kms from Thirthahalli, Kavaledurga Fort is an old Fort arranged over a slope at an elevation of 5000+ feet. This fortress is otherwise called Bhuvanagiri The underlying post at Kavaledurga was built in ninth century.

The ruler of Belagutti, Cheluangappa reinforced this post in fourteenth century. Venkatappa Nayaka, a Keladi ruler, gained this post and built seven escarpments to ensure this stronghold in the sixteenth century. Hyder Ali vanquished this stronghold in the eighteenth century and later the post went under the control of Tipu Sultan.

Presently just the vestiges of the stronghold are survived. This antiquated slope stronghold gives an all encompassing perspective of the Western Ghats and the islands shaped by the Varahi backwaters. Best time to visit would be December through April. Small trekking is required to achieve this place from the street.
