About Experience the Onam Festival

Celebrated for close to 10 days Onam is the most significant and the “Onam” biggest festival celebrated in Kerala. As Oman coincides with the harvest time of the year, it is known for the most substantial harvest and a festival of flowers. The special arrangement of flowers can be seen the front of houses. The festival also features a street parade of decorative elephants and floats, musicians and special Kerala art form.
The festival is celebrated when King Mahabali of Kerala was put on trial by God Vishnu for testing his trustworthiness. A child named Varmana asked for a piece of land covered by his three footsteps when the king approved, Varmana raised in size and his one foot covered the whole earth and another foot covered heaven, on which the king offered his head for the child’s third foot. God Vishnu convinced of the king’s generosity gave him the kingdom of Patala and his blessings to visit Kerala every year. Since then it became the most significant part of the Kerala festival.
