About Bhatkal
Bhatkal, also known as 'Batecala' in some historical Portuguese texts, is a port town in the Uttara Kannada District of the South Indian state of Karnataka. The town of Bhatkal lies on National Highway 66, which keeps running among Mumbai and Kochi, and has one of the significant railroad stations along the Konkan Railway line, which keeps running among Mumbai and Mangaluru. In its initial days, Bhatkal had a place with supporters of the Jain and Hindu religions and later obtained more religions and societies.
Bhatkal gets its name from the Jain Grammarian Bhattakalanka, who hailed from Haduvalli town. It is a town situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea, with Sharavathi stream couple of miles to its north. Bhatkal's area, albeit exceptionally key, was the fundamental factor behind the flighty history of the field in the zone. Bhatkal saw the ascent and fall of a few administrations and rulers. It was a piece of the Hoysala Empire from 1291 to 1343 preceding falling under the control of the Vijayanagara Empire.
After the crumbling of the last mentioned, the much-desired town of Bhatkal was brought under the control of the Saluva Jain rulers situated in Hadwalli a town on the state expressway towards Jog Falls. Various sanctuaries and basadis were developed amid the Saluvas' rule. Remnants of this period can be found in Mudbhatkal, where a couple of sanctuaries still remain as an old observer of that time.
