About The Sun Voyager
The Sun Voyager is a sculpture through Jon Gunnar Arnason, located next to the Sæbraut avenue in Reykjavík, Iceland. Sun Voyager is defined as a dreamboat, or an ode to the Sun. The artist supposed it to carry the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom.
In 1986, the district association of the west part of the metropolis funded a competition for a new outside sculpture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavik. Jon Gunnar's Sun Voyager received the opposition, and the aluminium model turned into presented to the city for growth. The full-sized Sun Voyager turned into finally unveiled on Sæbraut on the birthday of the city of Reykjavík, August 18, 1990. In an interview published in the newspaper pjodviljinn on 11 June 1987, Jon Gunnar describes the genesis of the work as being part of the Scandinavian artwork challenge, Experimental Environment, which carried out diverse creative experiments in Iceland.
