About Szigetvar
Szigetvar is a metropolis in Baranya County in southern Hungary. The metropolis's castle became the placing of the Battle of Szigetvar in 1566. It changed into a sanjak centre at first in Budin Province, later in Kanije Province. The former Andrassy Palace is subsequent to them. Some other monuments in the metropolis date again to Turkish instances. Two years after the siege, the mosque of Ali Pasha turned into built, later - in 1788 - to be transformed right into a Christian church: the Roman Catholic parish church. The two minarets, as well as the windows and niches with ogee arches suggest its authentic characteristic.
The Turkish House of pink uncooked brick partitions and interlaced steel window grills in Bástya Street turned into at first destined to be a caravanserai. The two holy-water basins of the Franciscan Church had been made of Turkish washbasins. The carved main altar of the Baroque Church is any other sight to see. In 1966, at the four-hundredth anniversary of the siege, Szigetvar regained its antique rank of a chartered ancient metropolis. Development began to gather pace. Today it has a population of 12,000. In October 2011, the town received the title Civitas Invicta from the Hungarian Parliament.
