About Panajachel
Panajachel is a city in the southwestern Guatemalan Highlands, which is less than 90 miles from the Guatemala City in the department of Solola. It acts as the administrative center for the municipality around the same name. The height is 1,597 meters 5,240 feet. The population in the 2000 census was 11 thousand, which has now been estimated as 15,000 the Inquito National de Estadica de Guatemala, and has almost doubled in the past few decades. Panajachel city is situated on the northeast coast of Lake Atitlan, and it has become a hub for tourist trade in the region because it provides a basis for visitors crossing the lake to visit other cities and villages.
In the 16th century, during the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the shore of the lake was a battle scene in which Spanish and their Kakchikel colleagues defeated Tzutulzils. After the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the Fransisco soon established a church and monastery in Panajel, and used the city as a center to convert indigenous people into the Roman Catholic religion of this region. The original facade of the church is still standing and it is considered one of the colonial-style gems in Guatemala.
