About Old Fortress

The Old Fortress of Corfu is a Venetian castle in the town of Corfu. The fort covers the promontory which initially contained the vintage metropolis of Corfu that had emerged throughout Byzantine instances. Before the Venetian technology the promontory, which lies between the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North and Garitsa Bay to the south, become defended by using Byzantine fortifications which the Venetians in large part changed with fortifications of their personal layout. As a part of their protecting plans the Venetians separated the promontory from the rest of the metropolis of Corfu via growing the Contrafossa, a moat that is a sea channel connecting the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North with the Bay of Garitsa to the South, changing the fort into an artificial island.

The fortress correctly repulsed all three predominant Ottoman sieges: the notable siege of 1537, the siege of 1571 and the second remarkable siege of Corfu in 1716. The metropolis of Corfu were given its Western call from the twin peaks of the fort. The Old Fort, Corfu town's handiest fortification all through that length, and the fort of Angelokastro were the only places at the island now not within the arms of the invaders at the time. In undefended components of the island, human beings were killed or captured as slaves through the Sultan's navy. The Old Fort, Corfu city's only fortification for the duration of that length, and the citadel of Angelokastro have been. The handiest two locations on the island no longer in the arms of the invaders at the time.
