About Nea Ionia
Nea Ionia is a northern suburb of Athens, Greece, and a municipality of the Attica location. It became named after Ionia, the area in Anatolia from which many Greeks migrated within the 1920s as part of the population trade between Greece and Turkey. Nea Ionia is 7 km northeast of Athens metropolis centre. The municipality has a place of 4.421 km2. It is served by means of three STASY commuter rail stations: Nea Ionia, Pefkakia and Perissos.
The current agreement became built after the Greco-Turkish War 1919-22 and the following populace trade between Greece and Turkey in 1923. That year refugees, particularly from Pisidia of Asia Minor, settled within the region. The new agreement originally named Nea Pisidia. But later, due to the arrival of many refugees from other places of Ionia, the settlement become finally named Nea Ionia.
The suburb developed hastily way to carpet handicrafts. The refugees carried their expertise in Athens and opened crucial carpet handicrafts. This branch become the main cost-effective supply for the residents of Nea Ionia for decades. Nea Ionia step by step will increase its populace and was elevated in a massive region. The suburb today comprises the districts Perissos, Kalogreza, Alsoupoli, Pefkakia, Eleftheroupoli, Inepoli, Saframpoli and Neapoli.
