About Kavala Municipal Museum
The Kavala Municipal Museum opened in 1986 in a -tale neoclassical building in Kavala town centre, very close to the Town Hall. Early in 2001, the museum moved to a tobacco warehouse, in Kapnergati Square, a far large area. The museum consists of a gallery of contemporary art the museum has over 100 works with the aid of such artists as Panos Gravalos, Stathis Haradzidis, Meropi Preka, Dimitris Kakoulidis, Klearhos Loukopoulos, a gallery of nearby painters Vassikaridis, Miltonas and others and the archive and sculpture gallery of Greek-born US sculptor Polygnotos Vagis.
Vagis become born in 1894 on Thasos, however emigrated to America, wherein he have become a sculptor. Is appeared as one of the maximum superb sculptors of the 20th century. Died in 1965 and bequeathed his private collection of sculpture to the Greek country. It consists of his Moons, Cyclops 1939, stone, Prophet 1925, marble, Groundhog 1933, chestnut, and Kouroi plaster. Much of his work is also exhibited inside the Polygnotos Vagis Municipal Museum at his birthplace of Potamia, on the island of Thasos. Between the ground floor and the primary ground, appropriately designed showcases show a group of birds which was assembled by way of Dr Anastassios Hourmouziadis and consists of many species from the Nestos wetland, some now extinct.
