About Fortezza of Rethymno

The Fortezza for this situation articulated "Fortedza" as opposed to "Fortetsa" is the Venetian fortress of Rethymnon, nearly in the focal point of the old town. The mammoth Fortezza, with its concealed a very long time of history, is unmistakable from each edge of the town and offers all encompassing perspectives of Rethymnon and the drift toward the west. As indicated by one hypothesis, the slope on which the Fortezza is assembled was once, in a period lost in the fogs of history, an island joined to Crete by a tight segment of land.

Throughout the hundreds of years the channel silted up and the slope turned out to be a piece of the Cretan territory. The slope of Paleokastro "Old Castle" was presumably the site of the acropolis of old Rithymna with its Temple of Apollo and Sanctuary of Artemis, despite the fact that this has not been demonstrated to date. In the third century AD, in the Roman time frame, there is a reference to a sanctuary of Artemis Roccaea on the slope. In those circumstances Rethymnon was a free city with its own coinage yet not an especially ground-breaking one.

You can achieve the Fortezza either through the rear ways of Rethymnon old town, or, all the more effortlessly, by following the drift street that begins from behind the old Venetian harbor. Take after the drift street, passing tavernas and bistros, for around 200-300 yards until the point when you achieve the little auto stop to your left side, at the foot of the means paving the way to the fortification.
