About Euripus Strait
The Euripus Strait is a slim channel of water setting apart the Greek island of Euboea in the Aegean Sea from Boeotia in mainland Greece. The strait's predominant port is Chalcis on Euboea, placed on the strait's narrowest factor. The strait is subject to robust tidal currents which opposite route approximately four instances an afternoon. There are two avenue bridges throughout the strait, each at Chalcis. One is the Euripus Bridge or Chalcis Bridge, a two-pylon, cable-suspended bridge constructed south of metropolis in 1992, and commonly referred to as the New or High" bridge, with a span of approximately 215 m 705 feet.
The strait is 160 m huge at this point. The bridge is obtainable thru a fork on the primary avenue at Aulis. The modern consensus is that the Euripus was closed with the aid of a dike of coarse sediment till approximately 6000 years in the past. It became opened following an unrecorded earthquake and remained open see Herodotus, e.A. VII.173 and VIII. 66, on the sea-war of Artemision till 411 BC, while the Euboeans determined to renounce their popularity as an island difficulty to Athenian hegemony and make themselves a part of Boeotia Diodorus Siculus, Bibliotheca Historica, 13.47, sections 1-8.
There is no trace of this either in Thucydides or in Xenophon in History of the Peloponnesian War and in Hellenica respectively. Diodorus mentions in particular that gaps needed to be left inside the dike to permit the Euripus tides to flow thru and that the present day have become plenty extra excessive thanks to the narrowness of the passage and says that a unmarried passage turned into left simply extensive enough for a unmarried deliver.
