About Antivouniotissa Museum

The Antivouniotissa Museum is a museum of publish-Byzantine religious artwork of the Cretan and early Heptanese colleges in Corfu, Greece. It is located in the former church of the Holy Mother of God Antivouniotissa. The church of the Antivouniotissa is an aisleless, wood-roofed basilica in which the precise characteristic of the Corfiote churches of the length are preserved intact: this is, the exonarthex envelopes the church on 3 of its 4 facets.

The exterior, which has arched doorways and home windows, is plain, the simplest decorative detail being a dentilated cornice – a morphology that chimes nicely with the successful modeling of the volumes. The bell-tower with arched openings on the pinnacle, rises inside the open courtyard on the East give up of the monument. The simple attention, in both the healing work and the new show within the Antivouniotissa Museum, become to recreate the monument as a church. On the basis of archive pics, the nave and the sanctuary reacquired their liturgical person as formed over current centuries.

All liturgical gadgets have been replaced in their right positions, and the pews and painted “wall-paper” were reconstructed. The narthexes became particularly exhibition areas, in that are displayed the icons from the church, and the larger a part of the antique series of icons from the Museum of Asian art of Corfu, account being taken within the exhibition of the chronological, iconographical and stylistic characteristics of the objects.
