About Prestea
Prestea is a metropolis within the Western Region, in southwest Ghana and approximately 50 km north of the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It lies on the west bank of the Ankobra River, approximately 60 mi northwest of Cape coast. The city is a part of the Prestea Huni Valley District. Prestea is the 40-6th most populous in Ghana, in terms of populace, with a populace of 35,760 people.
A railway line connects with Prestea to Tarkwa and beyond to the coastal city of Sekondi-Takoradi. Since 1873 there was mining of gold deposits in Prestea, and in 1965, unbiased gold mining corporations based totally in Prestea were merged on the time through the government. The World Bank granted a mortgage in 1985 to finance the gold mining in Prestea; however after 3 years of continuous losses by the merged gold employer, the mines that have been privatized from 1994 to 1999 had their mineral rights sold to the Canadian organization of Golden Star Resources. The mining of gold precipitated environmental problems, which includes the storage of overburden inside the location of the health facility, contamination of the river with toxic waste, as passed off in October 2004.
