Wittstock

Wittstock is a town in the Ostprignitz Ruppin district, in north western Brandenburg, Germany. Wittstock resulted from a Slavic agreement and become first mentioned inside the deed of formation for the Bishopric of Havel berg in 946. The call is probable derived from viola in the language of the neighborhood Polabian tribes, it become later Germanized into Wiztok Wit stock and Witstock tailored folks etymologically to Low German white and inventory. Obtaining the Stendhal town charter on 13 September 1248 from the fingers of the Havel berg Prince-bishop Henry I, it is one of the oldest towns of Brandenburg.

In 1251, Wittstock obtained an imprint of the city seal, which become one of the oldest in Brandenburg, too. Wittstock Castle, which had been constructed from 1244 onwards onto a Slavic basis, served as the house of the Havel berg Prince-bishops from 1271; it's far therefore also certain Old Bishop Castle. The Havel berg technology ended with the Protestant Reformation and the loss of life of the last Catholic Prince-bishop Busso von Alvensleben at Wittstock Castle in 1548.
