Weimar

Weimar is a city in the government province of Thuringia, Germany. It is situated in Central Germany between Erfurt in the west and Jena in the east, around 80 kilometers southwest of Leipzig, 170 kilometers north of Nuremberg and 170 kilometers west of Dresden. Together with the neighbor-urban communities Erfurt and Jena it shapes the focal metropolitan region of Thuringia with around 500,000 inhabitants, though the city itself tallies a population of 65,000. Weimar is notable in view of its enormous social legacy and its significance in German history.

The city was a point of convergence of the German Enlightenment and home of the main identities of the artistic classification of Weimar Classicism, the essayists Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. In the 19th century, popular authors like Franz Liszt made Weimar a music focus and later, specialists and modelers like Henry van de Velde, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Walter Gropius went to the city and established the Bauhaus development, the most significant German structure school of the interwar period.
