About The Marienplatz
The Marienplatz in Munich is "the core of the city" since the city was established in 1158 by Henry the Lion.
Initially the square, which is around 100 meters in length and 50 meters wide, was simply called "showcase square" and was situated at the crossing point of the principle streets.
In this way it was a place for the different markets in Munich amid the early hundreds of years.
The previous fish showcase was found close-by the as yet existing fish wellspring for instance.
These days the Marienplatz Mary's Square is named after the Mariensäule Mary's Column, which was raised in 1638 by balloter Maximilian I.
