The Old Botanical Garden in Kiel, also called the Old Botanical Garden on the Fjord, is a former botanical lawn and arboretum placed at Dusternbrooker Weg 19, Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is open each day with out fee. Kiel has had diverse botanical gardens considering 1668, whilst professor Johann Daniel Major set up his horticus medicus in the garden of Kiel Castle. It is uncertain whether or not this garden survived the Danish occupation of 1675-1676. Subsequent gardens were established at the web page of the former Franciscan monastery on the Falckstrabe and the lawn on the Prune.
No trace of those early gardens stays. The Old Botanical Garden started out because the private park of tobacco producer Abraham Christian Brauer, who in 1825 created a lawn with curved walkways, differentiated woody plantings, a swan pond, and terrific views of Kiel's fjord landscape. Upon his death in 1868 the web site turned into acquired by the University of Kiel, and from 1878-1884 was refashioned by means of botanist Adolf Engler as a botanical lawn, introducing geographic plantings of exotic species whilst retaining the panorama aesthetics.
