About Michaelsberg Abbey
Michaelsberg Abbey or Michelsberg Abbey, additionally St. Michael's Abbey, Bamberg is a former Benedictine monastery in Bamberg in Bavaria, Germany. After its dissolution in 1803 the homes were used for the almshouse Vereinigtes Katharinen und Elisabethen Spital, which remains there as a retirement domestic. The former abbey church stays in use because the Michaelskirche. The buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Town of Bamberg. As of 2016 and for the foreseeable destiny, the church is closed for maintenance.
The hill became inhabited before the abbey becomes founded. Excavations have exposed big partitions and a moat from the 10th century. After the advent of the Bishopric of Bamberg through King and later Emperor Heinrich II, the first Bishop of Bamberg, Eberhard I, based the abbey in 1015 because the bishop's non-public monastery. Accordingly the abbot replied at once and exclusively to the bishop of Bamberg. The monks for the brand new status quo have been drawn from Amorbach Abbey and Fulda Abbey.
