About Berg
Berg is a municipality in the district Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Hagenbach. The municipality is located on the German-French border. With its district Neulauterburg the place forms an interface to France. On the French side, the city of Lauterbourg immediately follows. North of Berg was the Westwall, so that the place with its border in the south to France known as the "Red Zone".
In September 1939, the place was evacuated and brought the inhabitants in the region Main Franconia. After several families had moved closer to their homeland, families returned to Berg in June 1940. A second evacuation took place in December 1944 due to the approaching US troops. This time, people sometimes found refuge in nearby villages in the southern Palatinate. In January 1945 the return was possible. Now it becomes one of the beautiful and most visiting place of Germany.
