About Verlaine Message Museum

The Verlaine Message Museum or Museum of 5 June 1944 is a chronicled exhibition hall established in 1991 in Tourcoing, France, close Lille. It is named after the message sent by the BBC's Radio Londres at 9:15 pm on June 5, 1944 reporting the unavoidable attack of Normandy. The historical center comprises of the solid fortification where the German Wehrmacht caught the message. Following the Battle of France, the German fifteenth Army set up its central command at Tourcoing.

The fifteenth Army was conveyed in Normandy and the Netherlands. The central station comprised of thirteen solid brick houses. These secured the occupiers against air strikes and substance weapons. German troopers with little arms and assault rifles controlled physical access to the shelters. Amid Allied getting ready for Operation Overlord, the genuine date of D-Day should have been stayed quiet, yet the Allies relied upon collaboration with the French Resistance. On 1 June 1944, a message was communicated over Radio London to educate the Resistance that the intrusion could be normal inside about fourteen days.

The main message comprised of the initial three lines of Paul Verlaine's sonnet Chanson d'automne: Les sanglots aches des violons d'automne. On 5 June, at 9:15 pm, Radio London communicate a second message: the following three lines from a similar sonnet. Blessent mon coeur d'une longeur monotone, or "Wound my heart with a dull sluggishness", implied that the attack was to start inside 48 hours. The Resistance should expand its endeavors against German supply lines, particularly railways, fully expecting D-Day.
